Graduate Lab Information

  • Suzy Pryor is the acting Computer Systems Manager for the Department of Agricultural Economics. Among other things, she runs the Graduate Lab server, setting up, and maintaining accounts on it, as well as setting up your GroupWise accounts. Contact her via GroupWise with any questions regarding the Lab.

  • If you have not done so already, activate your NetID/Neo account at https://neoweb.tamu.edu/admin/activate.php. You will need it for many things...

  • If you need to report a problem or need to request help, click here. It explains how to use Groupwise to send a support request.

  • Grad Students are given e-mail accounts on the departmental GroupWise system. Aside from using the GroupWise client in the lab, e-mail can be accessed easily from home by going to the GroupWise WebAccess page, http://ag-eco.tamu.edu, using any web browser. Simply use your GroupWise loginID and password for access. Check this account often, as departmental and possibly class-related e-mail may be sent here. This is independant of your TAMU Neo account.

  • If you would like, you can install the GroupWise client on your personal PC. You can use the GroupWise software just like you do in the Blocker building, connecting over the Internet. You will need at least 50MB of free space on your hard drive for the installation.

  • A&M students can connect to campus in several ways: by dial-up or a VPN or PPTP.

  • Students can purchase some types of software inexpensively at the TAMU Student Software Website: http://software.tamu.edu/. Products like Microsoft Office, and the Windows operating system are available at a low cost- and some packages are free to students, such as McAfee Antivirus.

  • Information regarding your Graduate Lab login ID, password, and combination for the Graduate Lab door lock will be available from Vicki Heard once the accounts are ready. Users will have access to an H: drive on any of the grad lab computers. This is actually a shared directory on the Graduate Lab server that controls logins on the Graduate Lab workstations. Anything stored in your private folder on the H: drive will be availalbe on any computer you use in the Grad Lab. This machine is backed up daily, but do NOT count on this as your only source of backups, as the Department of Agricultural Economics is not responsible for data loss. Make your own periodic backups of your important information.

  • Do not attempt to make changes to any settings on the graduate lab computers, save files to the hard drives on the computers (i.e. C: drive), or install any software. If you want to install any software, check with AgEco IT first. Any unauthorized software found on the computers will be removed immediately. This also includes the H: drive. If unauthorizedsoftware or material (i.e. pornographic material) is found in someone’s H: drive folder, it will be removed and the person’s account locked until re-authorized by the Department Head. A log is kept of security violations and other actions for each account. It is vitally important that you log off the computers when you finish, do not leave the computer logged into your account, or give your password to anyone else. You are held responsible for anything done on the computer while it is logged into your account, so be careful!

  • If there are any problems with the Grad Lab computers or printer, report it to agecoit@tamu.edu
  • When the new Grad Student accounts are ready, Vicki Heard will post a notice on the door to the Graduate Lab. You can then retrieve your UserID and Password from her in the Graduate Office.

  • When you graduate, you will have access to your departmental e-mail account for a maximum of 90 days. If you leave at any other time, the account may be disabled immediately.
